Saw this guy’s free show on Friday Dec 19. Some of his stuff is funny, but man is he homophobic. It goes well beyond the usual lame gags about girly gay men, though there were plenty of those; he had the audience chanting the chorus to a song (“It just ain’t right” or close to that) about hiking Brokeback mountain, with him trying to avoid gays. Another bit featured a gay airline attendant who is so annoying (because he acts ‘fey’) that Mike mimes blowing him away with a shotgun. Beyond bigotry, he had another bit about how funny it is when you get pulled over for drunk driving and can’t put your finger to your nose. It wasn’t long ago that the co-owner of Iconoclast books killed himself drunk driving, but it sure would have been funny had he been pulled over and couldn’t touch his nose. I’m sure Mike sees himself as an “anti-PC” tough guy, so why not throw in some jokes about lynchings and wife beating while you’re at it, Mike?

    Scott J,

Lighten up. Mike Murphy is a SV standard. His shows are a mix of music and jokes. Some new and some standards that the crowd forces him to do at each show (“Stage Coach” for one). If people didn’t laugh, he wouldn’t do the joke. That doesn’t make it right. Just the reality. I would say, that the ‘fey’ flight attendent isn’t funny to me, but there is plenty that is funny. Until the balance of his jokes shifts to the “unfunny”, I will be a Mike Murphy regular.

    Cheers,

    J

***I didn’t see the show; just my commentary in response to J.

A Sun Valley standard is perfectly groomed corduroy, a glass enclosed pool, rack of lamb carved tableside, the Roundhouse or a sleigh ride to trail creek cabin. Homophobic jokes are not.

For some reason many think it is still ok to make fun of homosexuals when if they focussed their jokes at other minority groups it would be considered obscene.

Class it up Mike. Sun Valley should be open and welcoming to everyone. I would love to see a gay ski week in Sun Valley.

Hi Scott & Mark, Thank you for your feedback! Last Fri & Sat were free so I could try material out. When I did 5 shows a week it took me 5 nights to tune the show and ad or delete material finally working up to the actaul show. The “Brokeback Mtn” song was actually penned by Willie Nelson and all though it did get laughs I had already made the decision to take it out of the program. The other routines you mentioned were the “Delta Flight” attendant which I have been doing for 5 years now, this was a slightly altered routine in which I am mimicing the flight attendant (not putting down) but imitating, there is nothing “homophobic” about imitating, gay comedians imitate straight people all the time.Call me and I will send you videos of such. The other routine (premise) was that male Boston Patriot football fans have become so enamored with Tom Brady that they in fact have this weird crush on him which they do when you talk with them. This is not a “homophobic” joke but an observation making fun of the “chauvaunistic, homophobic” attitude of these guys. Also FYI: Some of my closest friends in town are gay and love the show.
    Happy Holidays! Murf

Hi Mike ~ I saw your shows from the time you came to Seattle in the 70s at places like the Barefoot Peasant (maybe called the Cellar, too)/Pioneer Square, NW Passage/Bellevue, Giggles/U-District, and even Parker’s/N. Aurora, which I ended up managing until ‘97. Four of us gals even took a roadtrip to catch the rays in SF, and especially to see you at Tar & Feather. Whenever we caught your shows, we all had such fun, and laughed all night! Thanks for lifting our spirits on crummy days, and for making good days even better! I also want to thank you for calling me in the hospital after a drunk driver ran me down in my own safe neighborhood. It meant a lot to me, Murf. Take care. And will you ever return to Seattle or come to Anchorage? ~ Steph

Hi Mike, so 21 years ago last month, while on a ski trip to Sun Valley… the first morning up the mountian I met a nurse getting off the chair on Seattle Ridge. We have been together since. During that week we took in all that the area had to offer… from Grumpy’s to the Pioneer…the Vuarnettes and yes, your show. Our oldest son plays baseball for BSU and last week we traveled to watch him. It had been nearly 12 years but we hit the Pioneer on Thursday..great as always. The only thing missing was the opportunity to see you again. I even looked for a youtube clip of stage coach…nothing. Great memories for us and we will track you down in the near future…with the next generation in tow. ouch..yeah that might hurt a little but it’s really a good thing.

    Hi Mike,
Sure do miss seeing you here in San Diego, CA. in the late 80’s. Probably caught you 6-8 times at various lounge rooms in local hotels, Humphreys, a couple in Hotel Circle. We made reservtions to see you at Viejas but was called back and informed they were overbooked or something. Now I read that you are not travelling. What a shame but enjoy your family and life in Idaho. Can’t blame you. You are a great entertainer, keep up the good work.
