Hop to! Easter’s on its way!

Spring is in the air and Easter is just around the corner. Now is the time to make sure you don’t miss a moment of the festive holiday celebrations in Sun Valley.

Come to the Sun Valley Village on April 18 for an egg hunt and a visit with a very special VIB (very important bunny)

Come to the Sun Valley Village on April 18 for an egg hunt and a visit with a very special VIB (very important bunny)

On Friday, April 18, come and enjoy a sweet tradition at the Sun Valley Village.  At 4:30 p.m., everyone  age 10 and under is invited to search for eggs in a huge Easter egg hunt. Children are divided into age groups and asked to bring their own baskets as they scramble around the grounds in front of the Sun Valley Inn, collecting eggs.

Simultaneously, the Village location of the Toy Store will host face painting and children big and small can enjoy ice cream specials at the charming a la mode or satisfy a sweet tooth at the wonderfully nostalgic candy shop, the Chocolate Foundry. It will be a sweet beginning to a memorable holiday weekend.

Festivities continue on Easter Sunday, April 20, with a lavish Easter brunch. The Inn’s Limelight Room will brim with fresh, tasty and traditional delights, sure to please any age and any palate. Brunch will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please call 208.622.2135 for more information.

April 20 also marks closing day for the snow season on Bald Mountain. Before or after enjoying a bountiful brunch, be sure to get in your last turns of the year. The weather has been beautiful and the corn snow terrific. The final day of the season is traditionally also a chance for locals and visitors alike to dress up, turn their faces to the sun and appreciate the season that was.

Here, last tracks matter as much as first tracks!

Jazz It Up

On October 16, Sun Valley will jump, jive and wail for five days as the annual Jazz Jamboree, and all the live music, dancing and fun that comes with it, swings into town.  There is no cooler place to be!

Jazz Jamboree swings back into town next week

Jazz Jamboree swings back into town next week for the 24th music-filled year

People travel to Jazz HQ at the Sun Valley Lodge from all over the country for one of the most highly anticipated festivals around. Why? To listen to the music of more than 40 bands; to watch 260 shows on ten stages; to dance the night away after learning all the moves; to see old friends and make new ones; to take advantage of this spectacular time of year in this one-of-a-kind place. The fun is non-stop as enthusiasts choose from live jazz, Dixieland, Swing, Zydeco, and the Blues all day and all night, at all types of venues.

40 bands, 260 acts, 10 stages ... enough said!

40 bands, 260 acts, 10 stages ... enough said!

This 24th installment of the Jazz Jamboree story has some special events. Free dance lessons and an amateur dance competition will get everyone moving.  Come out to check out the All Star Big Band Bashes, a Marching Band Salute, a Pianist Showcase, even a Jazz Worship service. For a full schedule of what is available, click HERE.

The party kicks off with a free event and the entire community is invited to come out and tap their toes. At 7 p.m. on October 15, Meschiya Lake & Dem Lil’ Big Horns will get things rolling with their supercharged take on New Orleans style jazz. Opening for Lake (who incidentally was honored Best Female Performer at the 2011 Big Easy Music Awards) and her band will be the Wood River High School Dixie Band. The action takes place at the indoor Sun Valley indoor ice rink that is converted into a fantastic jazz club, replete with a sprung dance floor, for the duration of the Jamboree.

A Next Generation concert, scheduled for October 19 at 5 p.m. in the Limelight Room includes my favorite act at the Jazz Jamboree – the Whiffenpoofs of Yale. This all-male A capella group, founded in 1909, consisting of 14 seniors, is the world’s oldest, and perhaps best know, collegiate A cappella group. Every year, I take my children to see the Whiffenpoofs’ concert and their music and style always carry me back 20-plus years to my undergraduate years in New Haven. My children remain impressed that the Whiffs still perform in tails and I love seeing formal wear in the middle of the Idaho mountains. Performing with the Whiffenpoofs at this free event are Bill, Shelley & Westy and high school choirs.

Whether your taste runs to funky New Orleans grooves, big band swing, rhythm and blues, traditional jazz, sousaphones, lyrical standards, big band or almost any other permeation of this always-evolving music, you will find something to love at the Jazz Jamboree.

Sun Valley invites all jazz enthusiasts to take advantage of special room packages during the Jazz Jamboree. Call 208.622.2030 or email reservations@sunvalley.com for rates reserved for festival participants and stay and play right in the middle of the action.

Come join the party!

Sun Valley’s Room of Requirement

The Limelight Room is located in the historic Sun Valley Inn

Welcome to the Inn and the Limelight Room

The Limelight Room at the Sun Valley Inn has a great deal in common with the Room of Requirement at Hogwarts Castle (for all you Harry Potter fans out there): it can be transformed into virtually anything you need. Hosting a conference? Easy. Staging a benefit gala for 200? Got it covered. Need a space to feature a special speaker? Done. This room can provide a perfect setting for just about any occasion.

This weekend, the Limelight Room assumed one of its myriad personalities: that of a beautiful venue for and evening of dinner and dancing — all for a great cause. On Saturday night, it was the backdrop for the always-popular Fall Game Dinner sponsored by the non-profit Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation.

The Game Dinner is only one of many parties that take place each year in the Limelight Room.

With its beautiful crystal chandeliers and rich color palate, the room provides a canvas that can be painted countless ways.  I have been to events at the Limelight Room where the space is divided into two intimate areas – one for cocktails and one for dinner. I have enjoyed a mock casino night there, when it is jammed with “blackjack” and “poker” tables. I have listened to great speakers in that room (David Sedaris being my favorite) when rows of gold chairs faced the podium. Other events, like the upcoming Firefighters’ Ball, another local favorite, don’t require much more than a few bars, some cocktail tables and great music to morph the space into a nightclub. Each summer, the Limelight Room becomes HQ for the world’s media moguls. Within those four walls, deals are made that make history.

On Thanksgiving Day, the Limelight Room will once again be transformed, this time into a lavish holiday all-you-can-eat buffet.  Families and friends will gather to enjoy a home cooked meal with all the fixings that they did not have to spend days preparing.  It is worth checking out the terrific room packages and early season ski specials available for Thanksgiving.  Imagine taking a few opening day runs on Baldy or Dollar, eating until you can’t move and simply walking down the hall to your room for a much-needed nap and perhaps some football on television. Pretty great.

Chances are, if you visit Sun Valley or live here, some occasion will bring you to the Limelight Room.  It is quintessential Sun Valley and a place where memories are made.

The 2010 Janss Pro-Am Classic Debuts this Weekend!

Founded in 1988 by Beverly Hay DeChevrieux and sponsored by Thomas Weisel Partners, the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Fundraiser, the Janss Pro-Am is back this weekend! An all-weekend event with 22 registered teams, The Janss mixes a “Pro Racer” with four amateur racers, skiers or snowboarders. The teams then compete for racing titles and costume prizes throughout the weekend of parties and on-snow races. Rumors of costume themes from some of this year’s teams include Mardi Gras, School Spirit and White Trash Wedding. Last year’s champion team, the Community School, is back to defend their title. As is last year’s costume winner, Koth Sports. There has even been sightings of “Bad Cops” and “Indian Princesses”, so keep an eye out on the slopes this weekend for troublemakers in costumes zooming around Lower Warm Springs and around town!

2010 Janss Pro-Am events include tonight’s opening celebration Pro Party at Michel’s Christiana, Friday’s Apres-Ski party at Whiskey Jacques, and Saturday’s Award Banquet and Dinner at the Sun Valley Inn’s Limelight Room.  Benefiting the SVSEF’s Nordic, Alpine, Freestyle and Snowboard teams, this weekend’s event is one of the Foundation’s biggest fundraisers of the year. Big thanks to all that participate and sponsor the fun!
