Sun Valley Nordic Festival

2nd Annual Sun Valley Nordic Festival

Jan 28-Feb 5, 2012

The 2nd annual Sun Valley Nordic Festival will feature nine days of activities, races, clinics and fun events, discounts on nordic ski passes, discounts on demos/rentals, lodging and dining, which showcase and celebrate Sun Valley’s well-deserved reputation as "Nordic Town USA.”

The creation of the Sun Valley Nordic Festival was a collaborative efforts from a wide variety of groups, individuals, and businesses, now known as the Sun Valley Nordic Ski Alliance, who are all interested in further promoting Sun Valley as a major Nordic ski destination. The idea to create a weeklong event that capitalized on the renowned Boulder Mountain Tour ski race and built in new activities that might encourage racers to come a few days earlier, but also to have activities that non-race skiers and families could enjoy.

Watch the Big Game at the Sun Valley Club February 6

Nordic Coach Rick Kapala and Five Things He Loves About Sun Valley

For the past 23 years, Rick Kapala has been the Nordic coach for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, developing, mentoring, coaching and teaching hundreds of Valley youth. He has coached Olympians, National Champions, world-class coaches, and kids who just love to ski. As the Head Coach and Nordic Program Director, Kapala has two athletes (Morgan Arritola and Simi Hamilton) from his Nordic Olympic Development Team finishing competition at the 2010 Winter Olympics and with 29 years of coaching under his belt. Rick has been named USSA Cross Country Coach of the year three times throughout his career and has coached internationally for the US Team at World Juniors, the World Championships, and the Polar Cup. The SVSEF Nordic Program, under Rick and the rest of the SVSEF staff’s incredible tutelage, was named Program of the Year in 2009.

When coaching skiing, Rick can be found enjoying the many outdoor pleasures of the valley, wrecking havic at the Ski Team Hut or skiing in an ill-fitting Santa suit.

Five Things this Nordic coach loves about Sun Valley:
1) My wife Bridget.
2) The Ski Team. The kids are all great and the Team is so much of my life.
3) The People.  No shortage of wonderful people who love life and give so much of themselves.
4) The Fishing.  (Keep this one quiet).
5) The Mountains and the Rivers.  The adventures are endless.

A Successful First Olympic Race for Morgan Arritola!

Morgan Arritola, a Sun Valley local and a Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Olympic Development Team member, finished her very first Olympic race today in Whistler.

Arritola was the second fastest American female in today’s 10-Kilometer individual freestyle. She finished 34th overall in a strong field of 78 women. With her coaches, US Ski Team Teammates, parents, and SVSEF Nordic Coach Rick Kapala all there to cheer her on, Morgan raced a great race today. Congrats to our little speed racer! Watch for more from Morgan as the week continues!

Sun Valley Nordic Demo Days Sunday

Free skiing this Sunday at Sun Valley Nordic

Don’t forget about the Nordic Demo Days this Sunday, the day after the Boulder Mountain Tour, at the Sun Valley Nordic Center. Marking the official end of the highly successful Sun Valley Nordic Festival, the Demo Days give skiers a chance to try the latest and greatest from Fischer, Rossignol and Salomon. Wax technicians, local shop representatives and BMT racers will be on hand to offer advice and pointers. Hours are from 10-2, and there will be an outside BBQ during the Demo! Oh yea, and the Super Bowl will be streaming inside the Clubhouse later in the day. Best of all, the skiing is FREE all day, as are the Demos. Don’t miss this chance to ski some of the best trails in the world, on the best Nordic gear available today. What a great way to recover from the Boulder.

The Norwegian Olympic Team in Sun Valley

Seven members of the Norwegian Olympic Nordic ski team arrived in Sun Valley this Tuesday to finish off their training before the Olympics in Vancouver. Check out the fresh video and interviews!

Morgan Arritola is named to the Olympic Team!!

Morgan Arritola can now add Olympian to her long list of accomplishments. Arritola, an SVSEF athlete and US Ski Team member, was named to the Olympic Cross Country team today. The announcement came after good early season results for Morgan who is still riding high following an extremely successful 2008/2009 season, finishing 5th at the U23 World Championships and a solid 22nd at the FIS World Championships in the Czech Republic. As one of four American women to compete in the Olympics, keep an eye out for this speed demon in Vancouver.

This local speed demon, who graduated from the Community School in Sun Valley and is currently a member of the SVSEF’s Olympic Development Team, only skied for the first time when she was 16. Introduced to the sport by SVSEF Cross Country Coach/Program Director, Rick Kapala, she certainly has something special. Kapala said, "Obviously this is really exciting for Morgan, as well as for the team and the community. She’s sort of ‘our gal’." He continues to point out the spectacular nature of her rise as a Nordic skier. "For her to have started where she did, which was basically picking up the sport at the age of 16, and now, only seven years later, she’s on the Olympic team. It’s really awesome."

We can’t wait to see her compete next month and are proud of all she has accomplished. Keep it up, Morgan!
