Strolling through a Winter Wonderland

Sun Valley’s second annual Winter Wonderland Festival, taking place this Saturday, December 14, springs straight out of a picture book depicting an ideal holiday setting. Snow sparkles all around, the inviting smell of peppermint hot chocolate wafts through the air mixing with fresh baked gingerbread, holiday windows display cozy, colorful ways to keep warm and children’s laughter rings out from every direction.

The village brightens up with million lights

It is a family affair, indeed, at the Sun Valley Village when the Resort invites everyone to join them to officially usher in the Christmas season. The young and young at heart will decorate gingerbread men, little ones can enjoy a train ride around the Village, live music provided by choirs from Wood River High School will offer a light-hearted soundtrack and food will be plentiful.

Santa, I have been a very good boy this year...

Santa, I have been a very good boy this year...

Santa is coming to town, too, and will be available to hear children’s Christmas wishes, all while posing for that all-important holiday picture.

Back by popular demand, a scavenger hunt will also keep guests busy. Village shop windows are dressed with wonderful black and white archival photos depicting Sun Valley’s history as America’s number one winter destination resort. By identifying photos and completing the scavenger hunt, participants qualify for a free (yummy) prize!

Be sure to clear your afternoon. Gingerbread cookie decorating takes place in the Boiler Room from 2 to 4 p.m. Train rides are also offered during this time. Santa will take center stage on the Boiler Room deck beginning at 1 p.m. and will be ho, ho, ho’ing for two hours.

Last year, a group of friends and I bundled up our children and spent the afternoon in Sun Valley for the Winter Wonderland Festival, even finding time for a champagne toast to the season in the lobby outside the Duchin Room at the Lodge. The afternoon put a smile on everyone’s face and got us all in the holiday spirit.

But wait, there’s more! The fun continues on Sunday, December 15. With only ten days remaining until Christmas morning, now is the time to visit the Signatures & Gift Shop at the Village to have your presents beautifully wrapped. Members of Girls on the Run, a local program seeking to empower girls and young women through fitness and communication, will express gift wrap any present from anywhere. Donations are appreciated for this service.

Sunday also marks the return of the Lodge Dining Room’s famous, bountiful, elegant Sunday Brunch, offered from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. New specialties and complimentary champagne are included in this wonderful tradition.

Sun Valley is Ski Club HQ

What it's all about!

What it's all about!

If you have been on Baldy in the past few weeks, chances are you have noticed pods of skiers, often sporting matching parkas and matching smiles, plotting their next run, enjoying a hearty lunch on Seattle Ridge, mincing the moguls or cruising the groomers. In the past two weeks alone, 16 ski clubs have traveled to Sun Valley to enjoy a week’s worth of terrific skiing and boarding, socializing, specials at the Resort, and soaking up that Sun Valley sun and atmosphere in every possible way.

Almost every Saturday during the season, enthusiasts arrive in Sun Valley from Pennsylvania, Georgia, Oregon, California, South Carolina, Virginia, even Hawaii (maybe that’s where all the chic ski fashion this season featuring Mauna Kea comes from..) to enjoy a seamless, made-to-order ski vacation.

According to the Resort’s Bert Witsil, Sun Valley welcomes numerous different clubs each year, many of which are repeat visitors.  “We have our wonderful Ancient Skiers and Mount Hood Gang that came every winter without fail,” he explained, “then we host up to as many as 50 to 60 other clubs, from all over the nation that know about our great snow, fantastic grooming, and friendly, casual atmosphere and want to experience it for themselves.”

The schedule is fun-filled for visitors

For visitors in Sun Valley, a fun-filled week lies ahead

Ski Clubs have a rich tradition in America. They exist is almost every big city and many smaller communities, providing members with numerous opportunities throughout the season to experience fantastic hassle-free vacations where they can leave the planning to someone else and concentrate on what matters most: the skiing and enjoying!

From the moment the charter bus arrives at the Sun Valley Lodge and ski club members check in, receiving their keys, schedules and lift tickets, enjoyment and recreation await. A typical week in Sun Valley includes a kick off party at the Inn Lobby Lounge, a free tour of Bald Mountain to make sure everyone knows their way around the hill, a Taste of Sun Valley Welcome Party, a free Nastar Race, and much, much more.

“This is a great way to get a great experience in Sun Valley,” Bert said. “There is a lot of skiing, a lot of socializing and a lot of great deals.”

For instance, at the Sunday night Taste of Sun Valley party, guests mix and mingle, enjoying entertainment, drinks and delicious food. Here, participants receive a commemorative Ski Week pin, sign up for their free Thursday Nastar Race, and enjoy a great raffle. This is also where guests get a secret password for a private sale in the Village shops.  Never has there been a better excuse to replace those tired ski pants or stock up on some necessities.

On Tuesday, Sun Valley organizes a Pub Crawl in Ketchum that begins at the Inn and finishes up at downtown’s storied Whiskey Jacques. On Wednesday, the Wood River YMCA offers free day passes to ski club members to recover from a lot of vertical, or maybe even just the pub crawl.  Reinvigorated, Thursday offers the Nastar Race and awards party where swag and beer celebrate great results and even make those that were less than epic seem somehow unimportant! Friday it’s all about free skiing and then unfortunately, like all good things, this, too, must come to an end Saturday morning.

Thank you to all the local Ski Clubs who put Sun Valley on their schedule. It is great to have guests on the hill from all over the country and we are all glad you are here!  Remember to drink plenty of water, check in with the “Yellow Jackets” on the hill with any questions and to take a moment, or two or three, to appreciate our beautiful views, blue skies and unsurpassed experience.  Welcome!

Come in from the cold

Baby, it’s cold outside. Even the most stalwart and hearty skiers among us have eyed the mountain these past few days with some trepidation. When temps on the Valley floor are in double-digit minuses and we are in the midst of a cold snap (that will thankfully end by week’s end), indoor activities look pretty inviting.

Shopping is a great way to spend your time off the slopes

Shopping at Brass Ranch is an option in the Lift Ticket Exchange Program

If you are on vacation in Sun Valley right now, and took advantage of a multi-day pass (good thinking – best bang for your buck), you may hesitate when considering taking a day off from mountain, no matter the weather.

To the rescue? Sun Valley’s Lift Ticket Exchange Program that allows you to exchange your ticket if you change your mind. If you wish to take a break from the slopes and hold a multi-day (three or more days) ticket, you may exchange one day for other appealing activities.

Have you had your eye on a new ski parka or accessory at either the Brass Ranch or Pete Lane’s in the Sun Valley Village? Perhaps now is the perfect time to buy a new, cozy layering piece. Maybe there is a beautiful Sun Valley memento calling your name at the Sun Valley Signature Gift Shop. With this exchange program, you can receive $40 off your purchase at any of these fine stores.

Or does nothing sound better than a massage after a few days of aggressive shredding? With this program, you can close the door on the outside world and enjoy a relaxing and regenerative half-hour massage at the Sun Valley Salon & Day Spa located in the Lodge. For this, plan as far ahead as you can and make a reservation. It is a popular option.

Chef Adam Findlay offers a tasting menu in the Lift Ticket Exchange Program

Chef Findlay's food at the LDR is a perfect indulgence

Or take the whole day off and focus on dinner. Your exchanged lift ticket gets you a seat at the table for Chef Adam Findlay’s Four Course Tasting menu at the elegant Lodge Dining Room. Chef Findlay’s finely crafted and imaginative offerings rely heavily on locally-sourced, seasonal fare and everything he prepares is divinely delicious. This option, available every evening of the winter season except Sundays, and between February 16 – 24, will be a treat for your taste buds. (Alcohol and gratuity are not included).

The exchange programs invites you to try cross country for a day at the beautiful Sun Valley Club

Go ahead! Try cross-country skiing for a day at the lovely Sun Valley Nordic & Snowshoe Center

If you are not concerned with the cold and would like to try a different outdoor activity, your lift ticket may also be exchanged for a turn on the ice at Sun Valley’s storied outdoor rink (rentals included), combined with $20 off of lunch at Gretchen’s Restaurant in the Lodge. If working a different set of muscles appeals to you, then try a day of classic or skate cross-country skiing at the luxurious Sun Valley Nordic & Snowshoe Center. A trail pass and complete equipment rental is included. And for the truly adventurous among us, your unused lift ticket will also provide $40 off the day rate for a trip with Sun Valley Heli-Skiing. The snow in the backcountry is among the best it’s been in years. This choice may be booked by calling 208.622.3108.

Don't worry, great skiing will still be there after your day away

Don't worry, great skiing will still be there when you return to the hill

The great news is that the snow on Baldy and Dollar is also superlative and worth braving the cold for. If you layer up and head to the hill weather-ready, the skiing is really, really good. The other good news is you’d like a day off, you can enjoy something else great Sun Valley has to offer, guilt-free.

The Lift Ticket Exchange Program is available from now until March 31 with some blackout dates. Please take your lift ticket to the Sun Valley Village Recreation Center or to the ticket window at the River Run Day Lodge prior to participating in other activities.

Call 208.622.2135 or 208.622.6136 for more information and take a break! You deserve it.

Window Wonderland

This detail from one panel shows the great whimsy artists bring to the project

A detail from one of the panels

In a week’s time, when Thanksgiving memories are still fresh and bellies are still full, Sun Valley Village will provide a wonderful opportunity to take a stroll, shop and turn your thoughts to the holidays. Next Friday, November 23, storefront windows in the Village will come to life with eye-popping, three-dimensional, beautifully conceived and crafted scenes depicting the “Language of the Holidays” throughout the world. The new Holiday Window Stroll is certain to be one of the highlights of the season and will hopefully become a Sun Valley tradition.

A transformation of Village shops is underway as Jonnie Hartman, a talented artist in her own right, is busy unpacking everything from bags of brightly colored gumballs, oversize glass jars and Chinese lanterns, to hand-crocheted flowers and huge silver ornaments.  Spread carefully around a staging room in the Village, 13 window-size panels in various pieces, are quickly taking form into a whole.

Holiday window scenes awaiting installation

The panels, created by four international illustrators, Danielle Davis (United States), Ben Javens (England), Miguel Ornia-Blanco (Argentina) and Janine Rewell (Finland), are whimsical, bright and detail-dense. According to Jonnie, the artists create the scenes digitally and then transfer images onto enormous, flexible panels – something akin to supersize foam core board but with a waterproof and durable surface. Layering is crucial to the designs.  A sophisticated laser-cutting machine creates lattice borders, drifting snow and hundreds of other details you will have to see for yourself to fully appreciate.

Installation begins at the Sun Valley Signature Store

Jonnie Hartman plans the best way to begin work on a China-themed window

The holiday window dressings are rich in breadth and depth. In the Sun Valley Signatures & Gift Shop this morning, Jonnie was busy measuring and centering the background panel for a display depicting holidays in China. Drill in hand, she readied to hang the panel a foot or so back from the front window of the shop. Once the picture is secured, Jonnie’s next step is to bring the scene to life.  In this case, that means layering a serpentine dragon across the backdrop, hanging paper lanterns and adding dozens of unique touches to the life-size diorama. Stunning.

Throughout this week, installments will go up throughout the Village, as well as in the Sun Valley Inn and Lodge, creating a temporary gallery that encourages a free and interactive self-guided stroll.  Starting on November 23 and continuing through January 4, 2013, participants will receive “passports” at any window location. Visit each one to receive a stamp bearing a holiday greeting, then enjoy a special treat at the end of the stroll

The windows are a part of Sun Valley’s Winter Wonderland Gala.  On December 1, join in the festivities at Sun Valley Village to kick-start the season. Free and fun for all, activities include cutting the ribbon at the Gingerbread Village in the Boiler Room, a scavenger hunt, wagon rides, great food, a special visit from Santa and, of course, a look at those windows.  Festivities begin at 1 p.m and last into the early evening.

Sun Valley’s new window displays promise to fulfill that universal yearning for simpler, more meaningful holidays. The vibrant colors, exquisite details and evocative images will transport you around the world and serve as a reminder of what the season is truly about: friends, family, giving and sharing.  Take a moment to stop, stare and appreciate the season in front of these gorgeous works of art – a gift to the community from Sun Valley!
